Welcome to The Steel Magnolias Collection.

Dolly’s passing inspired me to revisit one of my all-time favorite movies, Steel Magnolias. I was a child when it came out, and I’ll always remember her best as Truvy.

Every piece is named after a line from the film, or a Dolly Parton song, and narrowing the titles down was practically impossible. The script is basically one long collection of insults and life advice.

Pink is the tie that binds this large collection of twelve paintings, along with bold color and jewel tones. Because as hilarious as this movie is, it also wrecks me every time I see it. I painted from both a light, happy perspective and the more serious emotional depth the movie so beautifully captures.

As Truvy says, “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” I totally agree.

So, here’s to strong women: the characters in the movie and the amazing actresses who played them.

And here’s to Dolly: a woman who consistently made the world better with philanthropy, books for children, and through her magical voice.
